Her memory behaves like a growing library of particular scenes. Design begins by retrieving and recombining those scenes, running the assembly as a moving simulation, changing viewpoint, and testing the imagined result against material behavior. The chapter’s strongest move is from cognitive description to design method. Grandin photographs a cattle chute from the animal’s eye level, notices light, shadow, footing, pressure, and social sightlines that other designers missed, and alters the environment so the animal can move voluntarily. The failure is not assigned to an uncooperative animal when a frightening ramp, glare, or slippery surface explains the behavior. The 2006 update narrows an earlier generalization. Grandin no longer treats all autistic people as visual thinkers; she distinguishes photographic visual, music-and-pattern, and verbal-detail specializations, with mixtures between them. The useful principle is cognitive plurality, not a new three-box test. STRUCTURE 1. Specific visual memories are recalled, rotated, replayed, and recombined. 2. EVIDENCE POSTURE Read the chapter first as autobiographical evidence and a record of design practice. Its livestock cases show how Grandin says she observed, simulated, built, and corrected systems. They do not by themselves establish how autistic people in general think. The neuroscience passages summarize research available by 2006 and explain it through brain-region and “computer cable” metaphors. They are time-bound claims, not a current clinical account. Recheck the cited studies and contemporary reviews before carrying those mechanisms into a paper, diagnosis, educational plan, or accessibility standard. The page’s own correction—that autistic people do not share one visual style—is the guardrail for using it here. AESTHETIC COMPUTER Aesthetic Computer opens through language—a typed prompt and named URLs—but most pieces explain themselves through image, sound, motion, and action. Grandin makes that mismatch actionable: the prompt should remain one route, not become the assumed shape of every person’s thought. The piece index and autocomplete retain the durable name, but a visual path could pair that name with the exact useful state, its primary action, and a stable example. Pattern thinkers need structure they can compare; verbal-detail thinkers need precise labels and state; visual thinkers need specific evidence rather than decorative imagery. None of these routes should diagnose the person using it. Grandin’s cattle-eye photograph supplies the sharper interface rule: inspect a piece from the participant’s actual position. Device size, glare, contrast, input method, sound state, and prior knowledge are part of the design. When a person stalls, first test the chute.
